The mother of the suspect in yesterday’s Oak Cliff fatal hit-and-run accident was suspicious when her adult son drove home in his badly damaged white Hyundai Sonata. Trying to do the right thing, she turned in her own son, Daryl Wayne Sirls, in to the police. The 48-year-old convicted felon was arrested at his mother’s home on the felony charge of failure to stop and render aid as well as other outstanding warrants.

Unlike in many other hit-and-runs where the driver takes off immediately, Sirls did stop at the crash site and call the police, but for reasons completely unknown, he left before they arrived. The Dallas Morning News Crime Blog hinted that Sirls may have had medical problems that led to his decision to leave. Fox news quoted on officer on the case speculating, “As to why he didn’t hang around and wait a little longer, I have no idea. We don’t know if he was shaken after the accident or if he was impaired. There’s no way for us to know.”
As for Sirls’ mother, she was put in a tight spot. When The Dallas Morning News crime reporters asked Sirls’ mother to comment on the situation she told them, “It’s been hard for this family, too.” It’s important, as the news uncovers more information on the suspect, not to forget about the victim in the accident. The deceased middle-aged victim has still not been identified. Reports now suggest that he may have been homeless.
