VON ORMY, TX (01/07/2017) — Miguel Hernandez was killed on Saturday morning after being hit by an intoxicated driver.
Authorities have identified 18-year-old Miguel Hernandez as the victim of a multi-vehicle wreck that occurred in the 11700 block of Interstate 35 South in Von Ormy, Texas.
Police reported that at around 3:00 a.m., 49-year-old Richard Sanchez was driving a 2017 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35 for nearly three miles, eventually colliding with five vehicles. A total of nine people were transported to the hospital for treatment.
One of those vehicles was a 2016 Ford Transit van, occupied by the Hernandez family. Tragically, 18-year-old Miguel Hernandez—disabled Cobb County high school student—died shortly after being taken to University Hospital. Hernandez, who had muscular dystrophy, suffered internal bleeding in his brain.
Sanchez was subsequently arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter and three counts of intoxication assault after admitting that he mixed alcohol with depression medication. His bond has been set at $250,000. According to investigators, Sanchez was still wearing a wristband from a bar when he was arrested.
The Hernandez family has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with funeral expenses.
